Some months ago, I started experiencing cystic acne. That was a first for me since I usually just have normal pimples, especially when it’s nearing my time of the month. If you don’t know, cystic acne is when the spot is deep under the skin, causing a large bump that’s highly uncomfortable, if not painful.
I tried my usual spot treatments (tea tree oil and VMV Red Better Spot Treatment) but they did little. I knew that it’s recommended to go to a dermatologist for cystic acne, but with my student budget, that was quite implausible. So I changed my skincare and spot treatment in an attempt to improve my face even a little. Nothing worked the way I wanted it to.
Desperate, I decided to try Dr. Kaufmann Medicated Sulfur Soap. I know I have sensitive skin so I just slowly worked it into my routine. The results were good!
The instructions say to leave on (the suds) for 1-2 minutes. At first, when I was just working it into my routine, I tested for allergic reactions by applying a little on my jawline. When there was no reaction after two days, I applied it on my face only for exactly a minute. It dried out my normal spots and seemed to draw out the pus (yuck, I know) from the cystic ones. Then I waited another two days for a negative reaction from my skin. Nothing. So I continued using it in increments. The results, as I said, are good. The soap seems to hasten the maturation of spots; it draws out the pus from deep under the skin, lessening the pain from five days to three, maybe two if the acne isn’t that major.
You will experience some dryness around the spots but it’s nothing a moisturizer can’t fix. After a couple of days, the spot would be dry enough to just flake off. There isn’t even any scarring. Hooray.
I wouldn’t recommend this for everyday use, though. As I said, it seems to draw pus to the surface; you might find yourself dealing with more spots than necessary. I recommend just using this on areas with acne and not the whole face.
The price is very low, as well, and the smell is very fragrant (for me, anyway). And because I use this maybe twice or thrice a week, a bar could last a long time. And it could be used not just for acne but for lice and dermatitis, so if you have those plus acne, this soap might be for you.
There you go. Have you tried this?
